According to a July 2021 survey, many Canadians still support their oil & gas sector. The poll results show that this industry still has high levels of legitimacy when factors such as wellbeing, environmental records, and social funding are considered.

About the survey
According to a July 2021 public opinion survey conducted by Research Co., three in four Canadians polled agree Canada should be a preferred global energy supplier. Particularly, this comes from the fact that the country has a favorable climate and environmental record.
Also, the poll shows that almost seven in ten (69 percent) Canadians say they have personally benefited from the oil and gas sector. For instance, nearly three in four Canadians (73 percent) acknowledge the oil and gas sector supports the country’s prosperity. Also, that Canadian oil and gas production helps fund critical social programs like health and education for Canadians.
Lastly, two-thirds of Canadians (66 percent) support Canada’s role as a global oil and gas supplier.

In this sense, Cody Battershill, Canada Action founder and a spokesperson, said in a media release; “It’s a strong and very welcome result, and one that shows most Canadians feel proud of the work their energy sector is doing; particularly, the work to enhance its record on environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria.”
Besides, “given the world requires $525 billion of new oil and gas investment per year just to meet current demand,” continued Battershill; we think we ought to push for Canada to receive a sizeable share of this investment.”
Indeed, results were based on an online study among 1,000 adults in Canada, conducted July 7 to 9, 2021. It also weighed participants for age, gender, and region. Thus, the margin of error—which measures sample variability—is +/- 3.1 percentage points, nineteen times out of twenty.
Other findings
Worth noting, among other findings, 70% of respondents agree that resource development could help alleviate systemic poverty within Indigenous communities.
Additionally, 73% of Canadians polled also agreed it’s essential First Nations be included in project development; specifically, to establish long-term revenue sources for their communities.
Accordingly, JP Gladu, acting executive director, Indigenous Resource Network, noted; In fact, “these are heartening results. Particularly, that indigenous nations and businesses want to be partners in resource development. Thus, this poll shows there’s widespread support to work together for the benefit of all.”
Finally, and it is worth noting, CanadaAction.ca is a volunteer-built organization that supports Canadian energy and natural resources development. It also helps raise awareness of the environmental, social, and economic benefits that come with it.
